Metadata file for sea ice salinity and stable-isotope measurements. Sea-ice salinities have been determined on ice cores drilled through the entire thickness of the floe with a 10-cm diameter fiberglass-barrel corer. The core has been sawed into 5 or 10 cm segments at the drilling site to minize loss of salt and brine and transferred into sealed plastic containers. Salinities of melted samples have been derived from electrolytical conductivity measurements conducted with a YSI model 30 conductivity sonde (measurement error <0.02 or <1 % of the bulk salinity, whichever is larger). Some melted core samples were transferred into glass bottles for measurements of delta-18-O at the Stable Isotope Laboratory, Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada (Dr. H. R. Krouse, Dr. S. Taylor). Stable-isotope measurements were performed on a VG 903 mass spectrometer (carbon dioxide equilibration, measured against VSMOW) at a precision of better than 0.4 ppt. All cores have been drilled in level ice. The file name indicates the day of the year in 1998 on which sampling took place (digits 2-4) as well as the sampling location identified by a three-letter code (digits 5-7). The first data column indicates the mid-point depth of the ice sample, the second column the salinity specified in practical salinity units (psu). Salinities below the detection limit (0.01) are listed as zero. If stable-isotope data are available, these are listed in the third column in parts per thousand according to the delta-18-O notation. The data block is preceded by a header of two lines indicating the location and day (line 1) and identifying the column variables and units (line 2). The three-letter site indicators are: APL - Airport Lead (a.k.a. Sarah's Lake), BLB - Blue Bio Lead (between Des Groseilliers and Blue Bio Containers), CHT - CRREL Hut (final location of CRREL Hut, LSH - Lake SHEBA (beyond Blue Bio Containers), PIT - Pittsburgh, QUE - Quebec, RDG - level ice near the intersection between The Ridge and the main mass balance profile, SDC - Sediment City, towards Sediment City).
