Mass: Sarah's Lake

Sarah's Lake was a lead that developed in late May near the end of one of the runways. It was the location of an extensive suite of observations of the thermohaline structure of a summer lead. In June 1998, we installed 6 thickness gauges on a line perpendicular to the edge of the lead. The stakes were placed 6, 11, 16, 21, 36 m and 51 m from the edge of the floe. This first-year ice was about 1.7 m thick before melt began. This was relatively thick for first-year ice at SHEBA and was due to an artificially thin snowcover. Artificial in the sense that this area was a runway and was frequently dragged to maintain a snow cover of only 5-10 cm. Click on the gauges to see results
