Pressure ridges

 

Ridges are areas of accelerated melting, both on the sail and the keel. Pictured is a ridge that formed during the shear event of March 1998. The photos were taken on 17 April and 8 August 1998. The skipole in the foreground of the April picture is 1.3 m tall. We instrumented a ridge with a survey line and measured ridge sail ablation every 5-7 days. During July, sail ablation rates were 1-3 cm per day. Profiles for 7 July and 31 July 1998 are plotted below.
