Seattle pond

 

We studied one of the melt ponds at Seattle. Unlike the alpine pond, the surface of the Seattle pond appeared to be at sea level. The pond grew deeper as the underlying ice melted. To observe these changes, we strung a reference line across the pond and periodically measured the water depth and the distance to the ice bottom. Measurement uncertainties were mainly due to the string sagging, giving errors of 2-3 cm in height. Fortunately, we can correct for these errors since we know that the surface of the pond is flat. The results of these measurements are shown in the animation below. The gray shaded area is ice, the blue is water, and the light blue is snow. The overall ice melt is shown, along with changes in pond depth. This is also an animation for an "alpine"pond
