Seasonal changes

SHEBA provided a rare opportunity: an opportunity to spend a year on the ice, to drift with the ice pack and watch the seasonal changes that occur over the course of an annual cycle. Winter, spring, summer, and fall, we had a chance to see it all. We saw the snow accumulate through the winter and quickly melt in just a few weeks in early June. We saw melt ponds blossom and develop, growing to cover nearly a third of the ice surface. As melt progressed some of these ponds melted through to the ocean, accelerating melting and weakening the overall strength of the ice cover. In the land of ice, salt water is the ultimate corrosive.

In addition to our quantitative measurements, we also photographed the seasonal evolution, looking closely at the met tower view  before and after melt season bridge panoramas, and panoramas of the Seattle mass balance site. Enjoy the pictures and see for yourself the seasonal changes of Ice Station SHEBA.
