Melt
continued in August with over 80 days of 0 C air temperatures. Many of the
ponds melted through and the personal floatation device became the de rigeur fashion accessory. On August 2 there was a major
divergence event, with Quebec and Seattle breaking off from the main floe and
moving several kilometers to the southwest. There was a significant increase
in open water associated with this event.
