Outreach allows researchers to share their work with a broader audience than reached by scientific journals alone. As scientists, we are passionate and excited about the topics we study, and at the same time we have an obligation to discuss our ideas and research with the general public. As part of all of our projects, we strive to connect with the communities living in the areas that we are studying.
Some examples of recently supported outreach efforts include:
- Knowledge exchange with students at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (St. Michael, Barbados)
- Engagement with local community members during the ATOMIC campaign (Morgan Lewis, Barbados)
- K-12 outreach in northern Alaskan communities, including at Ipalook Elementary School, Hopson Middle School and Barrow High School (Utqiagvik, AK)
- Public seminars at the Saturday Schoolyard Seminar Series (Utqiagvik, AK)
- Supporting STEM camps at NOAA/DOE facilities (Utqiagvik, AK)
- Radio interviews on KBRW to share information on ongoing research efforts (Utqiagvik, AK)
- K-12 presentations in the lower-48, including at St. Helena Primary School (St. Helena, CA) and Columbine Elementary School (Boulder, CO)
- Supporting outreach events at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, including the ARCUS Exploration Station, and federal sponsor booths
