ESRL/PSD Seminar Series

GIS in Water Resources Engineering

Lynn Johnson, Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of Colorado at Denver

Abstract

Geographic information systems (GIS) are strongly impacting waster resources engineering, environmental science and related design and planning disciplines. GIS spatial data management and analysis tools are now considered state-of-the-art, and application of these tools can lead to improved analyses and designs. Water resources engineering practice involves a multitude of data having spatial and associated non-spatial attributes. GIS can provide a means for integration of data from various sources into a coherent database supportive to modeling analysis, visualization and decision support. This seminar will focus on the linkage of GIS data and analysis functions with selected water resource analysis models, including hydrologic modeling of watersheds, flood plain management and river basin management decision support systems.
