ESRL Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) researcher Judith Perlwitz has been appointed co-chair of the Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC) Scientific Steering Group for a three-year term as of January 2016. A core project of the World Climate Research Programme, SPARC coordinates high-level research activities related to understanding Earth system processes. More specifically, SPARC promotes and facilitates cutting-edge international research activities on how chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere interact with climate and climate change.

Perlwitz is co-lead of PSL’s Attribution and Predictability Assessments Team. Her scientific interests include attribution of weather and climate related extremes, climate diagnostics, dynamic troposphere-stratosphere interactions, chemistry climate interactions, and the role of the stratosphere in climate and climate change. Some of Perlwitz’s professional activities include CIRES Fellow, Editor for the Journal of Climate, Review Editor of the WMO Assessment of Ozone Depletion 2014, Chapter 3, Lead Author of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, Chapter 10, and a Contributing Author of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, Chapter 9.
