Abstract

The National Weather Service is currently in the process of a wholesale replacement of the Global Forecast System (GFS). In the past year, GFDL's FiniteĀ Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) was selected as the replacement core. The Forecast and Model Development team at PSL was central in the dynamical core evaluation phases, and in the current implementation phase. I will provide an overview of the selection process, and PSL's role in the implementation of a state of the art forecasting system
