NOAA Hydrological Science and Research: leveraging regional perspectives and technical expertise

Abstract
Advancements in NOAA's state-of-the-art hydrological modeling and data services have evolved through numerous pathways. In some cases, OAR laboratories have developed products that explicitly address service line office requirements; in others, OAR laboratories have filled region-specific knowledge gaps by partnering on development and deployment of decision-making support systems with non-NOAA agencies. Here, we explore examples of how different approaches to solving hydrological modeling problems have either leveraged cross-OAR and cross-NOAA partnerships, or have missed opportunities for doing so. We also identify existing potential collaborations across OAR, with a particular emphasis on GLERL-ESRL partnerships, that might leverage regional and technical skills and help advance NOAA's hydrological science mission.
