Models and Weather Models at PSL

PSL uses large climate models to do many things

Climate Models

NOAA Climate Change Web Portal Link
The Climate Change Portal is a web interface developed by the NOAA ESRL Physical Sciences Laboratory to access and display the immense volumes of climate and earth system model output that informed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5)
Evaluation of Statistical Downscaling Methods for the CONUS Link
Downscaling methods are evaluated using the "perfect model" framework, where one model is treated "as if" it were the truth, both in the present and in the future. The evaluation is done in two phases reflecting two fundamental features underlying many empirical statistical downscaling -- bias correction, and change of spatial scale.

Weather Models

Reanalysis
PSL maintains a collection of reanalysis datasets for use in climate diagnostics and attribution. Reanalysis datasets are created by assimilating ("inputting") climate observations using the same climate model throughout the entire reanalysis period in order to reduce the affects of modeling changes on climate statistics. Observations are from many different sources including ships, satellites, ground stations, RAOBS, and radar. Currently, PSL makes available reanalysis datasets to the public. We also make many tools available to analyze and plot various reanalyses including the WRIT Tools and FACTS.
ESRL/PSL GEFS Reforecast Version 2
The ESRL/PSL 2nd-generation Reforecast Project has produced a dataset of historical weather forecasts generated with a fixed numerical model, using the 2012 version of NCEP's Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS, Version 10) which consists of 11-member forecast ensembles from Dec 1984 to present. The dataset is ongoing. Among the advantages associated with this long reforecast dataset is that model forecast errors can be diagnosed from the past forecasts and corrected, thereby dramatically increasing the forecast skill.Purpose
