Detailed description: The extended reconstructed sea surface temperature (ERSLP) was constructed using the most recently available Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) SLP data and improved statistical methods that allow stable reconstruction using sparse data. This monthly analysis begins January 1854, but because of sparse data the analyzed signal is heavily damped before 1910. Afterwards the strength of the signal is more consistent over time.

  • Please note: If you acquire data products from PSL, we ask that you acknowledge us in your use of the data. This may be done by including text such as data provided by the NOAA PSL, Boulder, Colorado, USA, from their website at https://psl.noaa.gov in any documents or publications using these data. We would also appreciate receiving a copy of the relevant publications. This will help PSL to justify keeping the data freely available online in the future. Thank you!

Missing data: Data have been interpolated in time and space by the providers. Land points are set to the netCDF missing value.

Dataset format and size:

  • netCDF file ~55 Mbytes for the monthly means.
  • netCDF file ~4 Mbytes for the longterm monthly means. (1950-79)
