COMET Online Education and Training: Satellite Identification of Atmospheric Rivers

Matt Kelsch

The COMET Program at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) has been delivering training for professionals in physical sciences since 1990. Training is funded by a number of sponsors, including but not limited to NOAA, the Meteorological Services of Canada (MSC), the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and FEMA. Our short online lesson on Atmospheric Rivers, ARs, was funded by MSC. MSC sponsors 1) an annual two-week winter weather course onsite in Boulder that is attended by about two dozen Canadian forecasters and several NWS forecasters, and 2) a series of short online lessons about satellite feature identification. The AR topic is included in the two week course and is the subject of one of the online lessons. The online Satellite Feature Identification: Atmospheric Rivers module ( focuses on the satellite detection of ARs and includes results from research at the NOAA/ESRL Physical Sciences Laboratory. It is a subset of the classroom presentation that was delivered at both the MSC course in 2011 and at the NOAA-sponsored QPF virtual courses in 2010. This talk will demonstrate the interactive nature of the online module and present pieces of some other hydrometeorological lessons and how they may all be integrated into a common theme for hydrometeorology training. Finally, this and all online lessons contain quizzes which can be taken for credit through the NOAA Learning Management System.
